The Thar was designed to be an off-road vehicle capable of withstanding the rough terrain found in many parts of India while still being trustworthy, cost-effective, and durable. The famed Jeep CJ series, which Mahindra has been producing under license since the 1940s, provided as inspiration for its design. The Mahindra Thar, named after the Thar Desert, was introduced in 2010 as an updated version of the Mahindra Legend. The latter was based on the Mahindra MM540, a car manufactured in India since the 1980s.

This is the less expensive version of the Thar 4×4 – over Rs. 2.33 lakh less in the petrol-automatic hardtop configuration at the time of debut. The 2WD model is intended for those who do not require a rigorous 4×4 but like a rugged-looking car with good road presence and a distinct offering. The Thar 2WD comes in three different models and two engine combinations.
The only visible difference is that there is no 4×4 insignia on the back three-quarters of the Thar 2WD. Mahindra has also introduced two new paint colours: Blazing Bronze and Everest White.
